An iodine fuming tube (or fuming gun) is a portable, hand-held glass device used by forensic investigators to direct iodine vapors onto a specific area containing latent fingerprints on porous surfaces such as paper and cardboard, allowing controlled, localized application without needing a large, sealed laboratory chamber. The apparatus consists of a narrow glass cylinder divided into functional sections: a rubber squeeze bulb or pump attached to one end manually forces air through the system, an initial chamber containing calcium chloride granules traps moisture to ensure only bone-dry air reaches the iodine, glass wool separators hold the loose chemical crystals in place while letting air pass freely, a central reaction chamber holds pure solid iodine crystals, and a tapered nozzle tip concentrates and directs the exiting violet gas onto the target evidence.
The solid iodine crystals sublimate into a violet vapor when warmed by natural body heat, and when forced out of the tube using the rubber pump, this vapor physically adheres to the fatty oils left behind by skin ridges, temporarily turning invisible prints into a clear, yellowish-brown color. Because it is a non-destructive method, it allows investigators to preserve the evidence for further chemical testing.
